NEVER contract any job on impulse… no matter what sounds like a bargain, a “today only” deal is probably not as good as it seems. Someone who shows up with “left over materials” will not deliver a quality job. If you didn’t solicit their business, but are in the market for work to be done, do your research before you hire someone. There is no correlation between a low bid and the best solutions.
Get References: Don’t just ask, check them. Ask us for references, and we will be happy give you a list of satisfied customers.
Get it ALL in writing. A good contractor will give you a detailed written quote with all specifications, measurements, and costs included. This includes all costs for preparation, labor, materials, and clean up.
Make SURE the contractor has insurance. If not, you could be left wide open for damages to you or your property. A million dollars is the minimum for liability insurance in the pavement industry. A reputable contractor will gladly furnish certificates of insurance. Be sure your contractor is bonded as well.
Prefer State Licensed Contractor. Ask your contractor if they are licensed with the state, or go online and check if they are. Be sure they are licensed to do business in your area.
Allow time for curing. You may walk on your new pavement immediately, but keep automobile traffic off for at least two full days, or longer in hotter temperatures. On new chip and seal, if you are careful you can drive on the newly installed and compacted surface almost immediately.
Avoid parking in the same spot. Try not to park in the same location every time to avoid indentations in your new surface.
If you need to turn your wheels to start driving or backing up, begin moving the vehicle BEFORE turning the steering wheel.
Don’t park or drive on the edges.
Weight from large, heavy vehicles or multiple vehicles can depress your new surface. When storing RVs, trailers, or motorcycles for long periods of time, place a piece of plywood under the jack and tires to distribute their weight on the surface.
Crack fill and seal your asphalt regularly.
